Description
Starfield Mancala Kalah is a digital adaptation of the traditional two-player abstract strategy game Kalah, re-themed within the science fiction setting of the Starfield universe. Developed as a standalone minigame, it was released alongside the broader Starfield video game in 2023. The game replaces the classic wooden board and stone seeds with a futuristic interface featuring holographic pits and glowing energy tokens. The board consists of two rows of six small pits, known as houses, and two larger pits at each end, called stores or mancalas. Each player controls the six houses on their side of the board and the store to their right. The objective is to capture more tokens than the opponent by the end of the game. The game is turn-based and requires no real-time reflexes, focusing entirely on strategic planning and counting. It is accessible from the main menu of the Starfield game or through in-game terminals found on various planets and space stations. The digital format allows for single-player matches against an AI opponent or local multiplayer on the same device. The visual design incorporates the aesthetic of the Starfield universe, with neon blue and orange color schemes for the two players and subtle particle effects for token movement.

Instructions
Gameplay follows the standard rules of Kalah. At the start, each of the twelve small houses contains four energy tokens. A player’s turn begins by selecting one of their own non-empty houses. The game interface highlights all eligible houses on the player’s side. Selection is performed by pressing the corresponding button on a controller or clicking the house with a mouse. All tokens are then removed from that house and distributed one by one into subsequent pits in a counterclockwise direction. Tokens are placed into the player’s own store but are skipped over the opponent’s store. If the last token lands in the player’s own store, that player earns an extra turn. If the last token lands in an empty house on the player’s own side, and the opponent’s directly opposite house contains tokens, a capture occurs. The player collects both the last token and all tokens from the opponent’s opposite house, placing them into their own store. The game ends when one player has no tokens remaining in any of their six houses. The remaining tokens on the opponent’s side are then awarded to that opponent’s store. The player with the higher total number of tokens in their store is declared the winner. The interface provides a clear visual count of each player’s store total and displays a turn indicator. A pause menu allows for restarting the match or returning to the main game.
