Description
Bagh Chal is a traditional strategic board game originating from Nepal. The name translates to "Tiger and Goats" in the Nepali language. The game simulates a conflict between four tigers and twenty goats. The board consists of a grid of intersecting lines, typically forming a 5x5 square with additional diagonal lines connecting the corners and midpoints of each side. The game is asymmetrical: one player controls the tigers, the other controls the goats. The objective for the tigers is to capture five goats. The objective for the goats is to block the tigers so they cannot move. The game is known for its deep tactical complexity, often compared to chess or checkers in its requirement for long-term planning. Historical records indicate the game has been played in the Himalayan region for centuries, often carved into stone or wood. It is classified as a hunt game, a category of abstract strategy games where one side has fewer, more powerful pieces.
Instructions
Gameplay proceeds in two phases. In the first phase, the goat player places one goat on any empty intersection of the board per turn. The tiger player moves one tiger per turn along the lines of the board. Tigers capture goats by jumping over an adjacent goat to an empty space directly beyond it, along a straight line. Captured goats are removed from the board. The goat player cannot move goats during this placement phase. Once all twenty goats are placed, the second phase begins. In the second phase, the goat player moves one goat per turn to an adjacent empty intersection along a line. The tiger player continues moving tigers and capturing goats. The game ends when either five goats are captured (tiger victory) or the tigers are unable to make any legal move (goat victory). In digital versions, controls typically involve clicking or tapping an intersection to select a piece, then clicking or tapping a valid adjacent intersection to move it. For captures, the player selects the tiger, then clicks the empty space beyond the goat. The interface usually highlights valid moves and captures. The game may include an undo function and a turn indicator showing which player is active.
