Description

Portal Through IT is a first-person puzzle game developed by independent studio NullPointer Games and released in 2023. The game is set within a decaying, non-Euclidean digital network known as the IT, a vast and unstable system of interconnected servers, databases, and abandoned user interfaces. The player assumes the role of a data fragment, designated Unit 734, which has gained anomalous sentience. The primary objective is to navigate through the IT’s collapsing architecture to reach the Core, a central processing hub that holds the key to either stabilizing the network or escaping it entirely. The environment is rendered in a stark, low-poly aesthetic with a monochromatic palette punctuated by occasional glitches of color, representing corrupted data. The narrative is delivered through fragmented text logs, corrupted audio files, and environmental storytelling, revealing the history of the IT’s creation and the fate of its original human operators. The game emphasizes spatial reasoning and logic, as the geometry of each level shifts and reconfigures based on the player’s actions.

Instructions

Gameplay in Portal Through IT is centered on the manipulation of portals and the traversal of non-linear spaces. The player controls Unit 734 using a standard keyboard and mouse or a gamepad. Movement is mapped to the WASD keys or left analog stick, with the mouse or right analog stick controlling the camera. The core mechanic involves the use of a handheld device called the Link Projector. Pressing the left mouse button or right trigger fires a blue portal onto a valid surface. Pressing the right mouse button or left trigger fires an orange portal. These two portals are linked; entering one portal instantly exits through the other, preserving momentum. Portals can only be placed on designated white, non-porous surfaces. The player must use this ability to bypass obstacles, redirect energy beams, and solve environmental puzzles. A secondary action, activated by pressing the E key or the Y button, allows the player to pick up and carry small data cubes. These cubes are used to weigh down pressure plates or activate distant switches. The player’s health is represented by a stability meter; falling from great heights or touching corrupted data zones reduces this meter. If it reaches zero, the fragment is deleted and the player respawns at the last checkpoint. The game features a contextual hint system, activated by pressing the H key or the Select button, which provides a subtle visual cue without breaking immersion.
