Description
Wrench & Nuts is a physics-based puzzle simulation game developed by a small independent studio and released in 2023. The game places the player in the role of a maintenance engineer responsible for repairing and assembling complex mechanical structures. The core objective involves manipulating a variety of bolts, gears, and fasteners to restore functionality to broken machinery. The game world consists of a series of static, diorama-like levels, each presenting a distinct mechanical failure. The player interacts with a first-person perspective view of the workbench or machine. The visual style is realistic, with a focus on detailed metal textures, accurate lighting, and precise physics calculations for every component. The game does not feature a narrative or characters; the sole focus is on the logical and sequential disassembly and reassembly of parts. Each level introduces new types of fasteners, such as hex nuts, wing nuts, and threaded bolts, along with tools like wrenches, screwdrivers, and pliers. The game includes a time-trial mode for experienced players and a free-play sandbox mode for experimentation. The soundtrack is ambient and minimal, designed to not distract from the task. The game is available on personal computers and major console platforms.
Instructions
Gameplay and controls are centered on precise tool manipulation and object interaction. The player uses a mouse or controller to control a cursor that represents the hand. To pick up a tool, the player moves the cursor over the tool and presses the primary action button. The tool then attaches to the cursor. To use a wrench on a nut, the player positions the wrench’s open end over the nut and holds the action button. The player then moves the cursor in a circular motion to rotate the nut. The direction of rotation is indicated by a small arrow on the nut. The speed of rotation is proportional to the speed of the cursor movement. For bolts, the player must first select the correct screwdriver head type. The player clicks on the bolt head to engage the tool, then rotates the cursor to unscrew or tighten. The game provides a visual indicator of torque, shown as a color-coded ring around the fastener. A green ring indicates correct tightness; red indicates over-tightening or loosening. The player can also pick up and place loose components, such as gears or panels, by clicking on them and dragging them to a target location. A snap-to-grid system assists in alignment. The interface displays a list of required parts and tools for the current level in the upper left corner. The player can cycle through available tools using the scroll wheel or a dedicated key. The game includes a rewind function, allowing the player to undo the last action by pressing a specific key. There is no health bar or failure state; the player can attempt repairs indefinitely. The game ends when all fasteners are correctly tightened and all components are in their designated positions.
