Description

This Time For Africa is a single-player strategy and resource management simulation game developed by the independent studio Savannah Digital. The game is set in a fictional, historically inspired African nation during the late 20th century, focusing on the period immediately following independence. The player assumes the role of a newly appointed national administrator tasked with building a stable, self-sufficient state from a limited set of resources. The core loop involves balancing infrastructure development, agricultural output, trade negotiations, and public health initiatives against a backdrop of fluctuating global market prices and internal political pressures. The game world is presented through a top-down, isometric map of the nation’s territory, divided into distinct regions with varying climates, natural resources, and population densities. A dynamic event system introduces random occurrences such as droughts, commodity booms, or diplomatic overtures from foreign powers, requiring adaptive decision-making. The game does not feature a linear narrative; instead, success is measured by a set of metrics including GDP per capita, literacy rate, and national stability index. The visual style employs a muted color palette with detailed pixel art, and the soundtrack consists of ambient field recordings and traditional instrumental pieces. The game was released for Windows and macOS in 2023.

Instructions

Gameplay is controlled entirely through a point-and-click interface. The primary screen is the map view, where the player selects regions by clicking on them. Each region displays its current statistics, including population, resource output, and infrastructure level, in a sidebar panel. To construct a building, the player clicks a region, then selects a structure from the build menu, which includes options such as schools, hospitals, roads, and factories. Each construction project requires a specific amount of currency and raw materials, which are displayed in the top resource bar. The player manages the national budget by clicking the treasury icon to access tax rate sliders and trade route assignments. Trade is conducted by selecting a port or border crossing on the map and then choosing a commodity to export or import from a list of available partners. Crisis events appear as pop-up notifications in the center of the screen, presenting two or three choices; the player clicks one option to proceed. The game is paused by pressing the spacebar, allowing for planning. Time advances by clicking the speed control buttons in the lower right corner, which toggle between pause, normal speed, and fast forward. The player can access a detailed breakdown of national statistics by clicking the report button in the upper left corner. There is no direct control over individual citizens; all actions are executed at the regional or national level. The game ends when the national stability index reaches zero or when a set number of in-game years have passed, at which point a final summary of the player’s achievements is displayed.
