Description
Soviet Cars Differences is a puzzle game developed by a small independent studio, released in 2023 for personal computers and mobile platforms. The game presents a series of side-by-side images depicting various automobiles manufactured in the Soviet Union, including models such as the VAZ-2101 (Zhiguli), GAZ-24 (Volga), and ZAZ-968 (Zaporozhets). Each level displays two nearly identical photographs of a specific vehicle, often set in period-appropriate environments like snowy streets, factory courtyards, or rural roads. The core objective requires the player to identify a predetermined number of subtle discrepancies between the two images. These differences range from missing hubcaps and altered license plates to changes in the position of windshield wipers, the color of a bumper, or the presence of a side mirror. The game includes a timer for each level, and a scoring system awards points based on speed and accuracy. A hint system is available, but its use reduces the final score. The visual style employs a muted color palette and low-resolution textures to replicate the aesthetic of vintage photography. The game contains no narrative or character progression; its structure is purely level-based, with increasing difficulty as the player advances. The total number of levels is 50, each featuring a different Soviet car model or variant.
Instructions
Gameplay is controlled entirely through mouse or touch input. On a computer, the player clicks on a location in either the left or right image where a difference is suspected. A successful click highlights the discrepancy with a brief visual marker and increments the counter. An incorrect click results in a temporary penalty, such as a short time deduction or a visual flash. On mobile devices, the player taps the screen at the point of the suspected difference. The interface displays a counter at the top of the screen showing the number of remaining differences to find. A timer is visible in the upper corner, counting down from a set limit per level. The player can zoom in on either image by scrolling the mouse wheel or using a pinch gesture on a touchscreen. A magnifying glass icon toggles a zoomed view. The hint button, located at the bottom center, reveals one random difference when pressed. The pause menu, accessible via an icon in the corner, allows the player to restart the current level or return to the level selection screen. No keyboard shortcuts are used beyond the pause function. The game does not support multiplayer or cooperative modes.
