Description

Marine Spot The Difference is a puzzle video game developed by Ocean Interactive and released in 2023 for personal computers and mobile platforms. The game presents players with a series of side-by-side photographic images depicting various underwater marine environments, including coral reefs, kelp forests, deep-sea trenches, and coastal tide pools. Each pair of images appears identical at first glance but contains a set number of deliberate discrepancies. These differences range from subtle changes in color, shape, or position of marine life to alterations in environmental details such as light rays, bubbles, or seabed textures. The game features over one hundred levels, organized into thematic zones that progress from shallow, brightly lit waters to darker, more complex abyssal scenes. A scoring system tracks the time taken to identify all differences, with bonus points awarded for completing a level without using hints. The visual assets are derived from high-resolution stock photography and digitally rendered illustrations, ensuring a realistic yet stylized representation of marine biodiversity. The game includes a built-in encyclopedia that unlocks brief factual entries about depicted species and habitats upon level completion. No narrative or character-driven elements are present; the sole objective is the completion of each visual puzzle.

Instructions

Gameplay is initiated by selecting a level from a grid-based menu. The player is presented with two identical-looking images displayed side by side on a single screen. The objective is to locate and tap or click on all differences between the two images. Each difference is highlighted with a circular outline upon correct identification, and a counter at the top of the screen displays the number of remaining discrepancies. The player interacts with the game using a mouse or touch input. On a computer, the left mouse button is used to click directly on a suspected difference. On a mobile device, the player taps the screen at the location of the difference. A correct selection produces a brief visual confirmation and an audible chime. An incorrect selection results in a short penalty animation and a reduction of the player’s available hint meter. The hint meter, located in the upper right corner, gradually refills over time or can be instantly replenished through in-game currency earned by completing levels. Activating a hint causes a brief, pulsing glow to appear over one of the remaining differences. The game does not feature a pause function during active play; the timer continues until all differences are found. Upon locating all discrepancies, the level is marked as complete, and the player is returned to the level selection screen. No additional control options, such as keyboard shortcuts or gesture customization, are provided.
