Description

Kitty Griddion Gauntlet is a single-player puzzle-action video game developed by independent studio Feral Codex and released in 2023 for personal computers and Nintendo Switch. The game combines tile-matching mechanics with real-time combat and resource management. The player controls a small, anthropomorphic cat known as the Griddion, who must navigate a series of procedurally generated arenas called gauntlets. Each gauntlet is a grid-based arena populated by hostile geometric entities. The objective is to survive waves of enemies while collecting energy shards to power a central portal. The game’s visual style employs a minimalist, high-contrast palette of neon colors against a black background. The soundtrack is a dynamic electronic score that intensifies with combat activity. The narrative is delivered through brief, text-based logs discovered between gauntlets, detailing the Griddion’s mission to restore balance to a corrupted digital dimension. The game features a single-player campaign with 50 gauntlets, a daily challenge mode, and a leaderboard system for score comparison.

Instructions

Gameplay and controls are centered on the grid-based movement and tile manipulation. The player moves the Griddion using the directional pad or left analog stick. Each movement shifts the cat one tile in the chosen cardinal direction. Enemies also move one tile per player action, creating a turn-based rhythm within real-time pressure. The primary action is the “Swap” command, activated by pressing the A button or the spacebar. This swaps the position of the Griddion with an adjacent tile, which can be an enemy, a power-up, or an empty space. Swapping with an enemy destroys that enemy and grants energy. Swapping with a power-up tile activates its effect, such as a temporary speed boost or a screen-clearing blast. The B button or shift key performs a “Dash,” moving the Griddion two tiles in a straight line, passing through enemies and damaging them. Energy collected from destroyed enemies fills a meter at the top of the screen. When the meter is full, the player can press the X button or the E key to activate “Gauntlet Mode,” which freezes all enemies for five seconds and allows the Griddion to move freely without tile restrictions. The goal of each gauntlet is to collect a set number of energy shards, indicated by a counter, and then reach the exit portal. Failure occurs if the Griddion’s health bar, displayed as a row of hearts, is depleted by enemy contact or if the timer runs out. The game provides a tutorial that introduces each control sequentially.
