Description
BlackenedSun is a 2024 single-player survival horror game developed by the independent studio Hollow Light Interactive. The game is set in the fictional, perpetually eclipsed city of Ombraluna, where a catastrophic event known as the "Blackening" has extinguished all natural light and caused the sun to appear as a solid, black sphere. The player assumes the role of Elara Vance, a geologist who awakens in a collapsed subway tunnel with no memory of the preceding 48 hours. The primary objective is to navigate the decaying urban environment, uncover the cause of the Blackening, and survive encounters with hostile entities known as "Shades," which are attracted to any source of artificial illumination. The game world is rendered in a monochromatic palette with occasional, muted color accents tied to specific environmental hazards or narrative triggers. Sound design relies heavily on ambient noise, including distant echoes, mechanical groans, and the persistent hum of the black sun. The narrative is delivered through environmental storytelling, audio logs, and fragmented radio broadcasts. The game features a non-linear progression system, allowing players to explore multiple districts of Ombraluna in any order, though certain areas become inaccessible based on the player's inventory of light-based resources.
Instructions
Gameplay in BlackenedSun is structured around resource management and environmental navigation. The player character has a health meter and a "Sanity" meter, the latter of which depletes when the player remains in complete darkness for extended periods. Sanity loss causes visual and auditory distortions, including false movement cues and screen warping. The primary control scheme uses a standard keyboard and mouse or gamepad. The WASD keys or left analog stick control movement. The mouse or right analog stick controls the camera and aiming. The left mouse button or right trigger activates the primary tool, a "Lumen Lantern," which emits a narrow beam of light that can repel Shades but drains a battery charge. The right mouse button or left trigger performs a "Listen" action, highlighting nearby interactive objects and enemy locations within a short radius for three seconds. The spacebar or A button initiates a sprint, which consumes stamina. The E key or X button interacts with objects, picks up items, and opens doors. The Tab key or Select button opens the inventory menu, where items such as battery packs, medical syringes, and "Sun Shards" (used to temporarily illuminate dark rooms) can be selected and used. Combat is limited; the player cannot kill Shades, only stun them with the Lumen Lantern or evade them by hiding in designated "Safe Zones" marked by a faint blue glow. Death results in a reload from the last automatic checkpoint, which occurs upon entering a new district or completing a major puzzle.
