Description

Launch Jack is a single-player arcade-style video game released in 1983 by the now-defunct developer Digital Concepts. The game is set in a vertically scrolling industrial environment where the player controls a character known as a "Jack," a small, anthropomorphic mechanical figure tasked with ascending a series of unstable, collapsing platforms. The primary objective is to reach the top of each level to activate a "Launch Pad," which propels the Jack to the next stage. The game is notable for its use of a physics engine that simulates platform degradation and variable gravity. Each level presents a randomized arrangement of platforms, some of which are stationary, while others tilt, retract, or disintegrate upon contact. The player must navigate these hazards while avoiding falling debris and hostile entities called "Gremlins," which attempt to dislodge the Jack. The game features a single life per credit, with no continues, and a high-score system that records the highest level reached. The visual design employs a monochrome palette with green and black tones, typical of early 1980s raster graphics. The audio consists of a single looping chiptune track and sound effects for jumps, collisions, and platform collapses. Launch Jack was distributed primarily for the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum home computers, with a limited arcade cabinet release in select European markets.

Instructions

Gameplay and controls are executed through a single joystick or keyboard input. The player moves the Jack left or right using the horizontal axis. A single button or key initiates a jump. The jump height is fixed, but the horizontal distance can be adjusted by holding the directional input during the jump. The Jack can only land on platforms that are visually intact; platforms that have begun to flash or crack will collapse after a short delay. The player must time jumps to avoid landing on these unstable surfaces. The Launch Pad at the top of each level is a stationary, non-collapsing platform. To activate it, the Jack must stand on it for two seconds without moving. Gremlins appear from the edges of the screen and move in predictable patterns. Contact with a Gremlin or falling off the bottom of the screen results in an immediate loss of the game. The player can temporarily stun a Gremlin by jumping on its head, which causes it to fall off the screen. There are no power-ups or weapons. The game ends when the Jack is destroyed or when the player reaches the final level, which is level 99. The score is calculated based on the number of platforms successfully traversed, with bonus points for each Gremlin stunned.
