Description

Bir In a Pot is a single-player puzzle simulation game developed by independent studio Feral Forge, released in 2023 for Windows and macOS. The game is set in a confined, procedurally generated ecosystem contained within a single ceramic cooking pot. The player assumes the role of an unseen caretaker responsible for the survival and evolution of a small, bird-like creature referred to as the Bir. The pot’s environment is a closed system with limited resources, including soil, water, and organic matter. The Bir’s behavior and physical form are influenced by the player’s management of these resources and the introduction of external stimuli, such as temperature changes or the addition of seeds. The game features a real-time clock and a life cycle system, where the Bir can age, reproduce, or perish based on environmental conditions. There is no narrative or dialogue; the experience is driven entirely by emergent interactions between the Bir and its habitat. The visual style is isometric and minimalist, with a muted color palette emphasizing the pot’s clay texture and the Bir’s simple, geometric design. Sound design consists of ambient environmental noises, such as dripping water and rustling leaves, with no musical score.

Instructions

Gameplay and controls are managed through a point-and-click interface with keyboard shortcuts. The primary view is a fixed overhead perspective of the pot’s interior. The player interacts with the environment by clicking on specific zones: the soil, the water pool, and the Bir itself. Left-clicking on the soil opens a radial menu for actions such as planting seeds, adding fertilizer, or adjusting moisture levels. Right-clicking on the Bir displays its current status, including hunger, hydration, and energy levels. The player can drag and drop items from an inventory bar at the bottom of the screen into the pot. Keyboard keys control time: pressing the Spacebar pauses the simulation, the Up Arrow key accelerates time by 2x, and the Down Arrow key returns to normal speed. The mouse wheel zooms in and out of the pot. The game provides no explicit tutorials; all mechanics are learned through trial and error. The Bir responds to player actions with simple animations, such as pecking at food or fluffing feathers when cold. The objective is to maintain the Bir’s health and encourage it to lay eggs, which hatch into new Birs with inherited traits. Failure to manage resources results in the Bir’s death, after which the pot resets with a new seed. There is no scoring system or win condition; the game ends only when the player quits.
