Description

Worm Colors is a digital puzzle-strategy game released in 2023, developed by independent studio Nematode Games. The game is set within a subterranean environment represented as a grid-based playing field. The primary objective involves controlling a segmented worm composed of colored blocks. Each segment possesses a distinct color, and the worm moves by extending its head into adjacent empty cells while its tail retracts, creating a continuous sliding motion. The playing field contains static obstacles, such as rocks and roots, as well as colored food pellets. The worm’s color changes dynamically based on the sequence of food consumed. The game features a single-player campaign with 120 levels, each presenting a unique spatial puzzle. A level is completed when the worm reaches a designated exit cell. The game also includes a sandbox mode where players can design custom levels. The visual design employs a minimalist aesthetic with flat, saturated colors and a clean interface. The soundtrack consists of ambient electronic tones that shift in pitch according to the worm’s current color state. The game is available on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android platforms.

Instructions

Gameplay and controls are governed by a turn-based movement system. The player controls the worm using directional inputs. On keyboard, the arrow keys or W, A, S, D keys are used to direct the worm’s head into an adjacent empty cell. On touchscreen devices, a swipe gesture in the desired direction performs the same action. The worm cannot move backward into its own body, as this would cause a collision and end the level. Each movement consumes one turn. The worm’s body segments leave a trail of their respective colors on the grid. When the worm’s head moves over a colored food pellet, the head segment adopts that pellet’s color, and the tail segment is removed, shortening the worm by one cell. The worm’s length is restored only by consuming a special growth pellet. Obstacles are immovable and block movement. The exit cell is marked with a glowing outline. To complete a level, the worm’s head must occupy the exit cell. The game provides an undo button that reverses the last move, usable up to three times per level. A level timer tracks the number of moves taken. The interface displays the current color of the worm’s head, the number of remaining moves, and a minimap of the entire grid. No score multiplier or combo system is present.
