Description
TimeGems is a puzzle-strategy video game developed by independent studio ChronoForge Games and released in 2023 for personal computers and mobile platforms. The game is set in a fictional crystalline dimension where time is a physical resource stored within gemstones. The player assumes the role of a Chrono-Architect, a being tasked with restoring stability to fractured timelines by manipulating these gems. The core mechanic revolves around a grid-based board populated with colored gems, each representing a different temporal property: red gems accelerate time, blue gems slow it, green gems stabilize sequences, and yellow gems create temporal loops. The game features a single-player campaign with 120 levels, each presenting a unique puzzle configuration. Progression is linear, with later levels introducing obstacles such as frozen gems, decayed tiles, and time-locked barriers. The visual design employs a minimalist aesthetic with a monochromatic background to emphasize the vibrant gem colors. The soundtrack is procedurally generated, adapting to the player’s speed of gem manipulation. TimeGems does not include a multiplayer mode or microtransactions; all content is unlocked through gameplay.
Instructions
Gameplay and controls are based on a turn-based system where the player selects and swaps adjacent gems on a 8x8 grid. The objective of each level is to collect a specified number of temporal energy units by forming chains of three or more identical gems. A chain is created by aligning gems horizontally or vertically. When a chain is formed, the gems disappear, and new gems fall from the top of the grid to fill the empty spaces. Each chain generates a specific amount of temporal energy based on the gem color and chain length. The player has a limited number of moves per level, displayed in a counter at the top of the screen. Additional moves can be earned by creating chains of five or more gems, which spawn a special "time shard" that grants one extra move when collected. The interface is controlled via mouse click on desktop or touch input on mobile. To swap gems, the player clicks or taps the first gem, then clicks or taps an adjacent gem. A swap is only valid if it results in a chain of three or more gems; invalid swaps are rejected with a visual shake. The game also includes a "rewind" button, usable once per level, which reverses the last three moves. A pause menu allows the player to restart the level or return to the level select screen. No keyboard shortcuts are available.
