Description
The Big Hit Run is a single-player action-strategy video game developed by Studio Maelstrom and released in 2023 for personal computers and eighth-generation consoles. The game is set in a fictionalized version of 1980s corporate America, where the player assumes the role of a disgruntled middle manager named Arthur Vance. After being passed over for a promotion, Arthur decides to sabotage his company’s quarterly earnings report by orchestrating a series of high-profile, destructive “hits” on key corporate assets. The game combines elements of stealth, puzzle-solving, and physics-based combat. The narrative is presented through a series of static comic-book-style cutscenes, with dialogue conveyed via text boxes. The game world is divided into five distinct office complexes, each representing a different department (e.g., Accounting, Research & Development, Executive Suites). Each level contains multiple objectives, such as disabling security systems, destroying prototype equipment, or stealing confidential documents. The game features a dynamic reputation system; actions taken by the player affect how security personnel and non-player characters react. A high notoriety score increases patrol density and alarm response speed. The game’s visual style employs a cel-shaded aesthetic with a muted color palette dominated by grays, beiges, and neon accents. The soundtrack consists of synthesized ambient tracks and period-appropriate sound effects.
Instructions
The player controls Arthur Vance from a third-person perspective. Movement is mapped to the left analog stick or the W, A, S, D keys. The right analog stick or mouse controls the camera. The primary action button (E on keyboard, A on controller) interacts with objects, opens doors, and picks up items. The secondary action button (Q on keyboard, X on controller) performs a context-sensitive “hit” action, which can be a melee attack, a tool activation, or a sabotage attempt. The player can crouch by pressing the left control key or the left thumbstick. Crouching reduces movement speed but lowers visibility and sound generation. A stamina bar, displayed in the lower-left corner of the screen, depletes when sprinting (left shift key or right trigger) or performing heavy attacks. Stamina regenerates when the player is stationary or walking. The inventory system is accessed by pressing the Tab key or the Y button. The player can carry up to four items, including tools like a crowbar, a hacking device, and a distraction item (e.g., a coffee mug). Items are selected using the number keys or the D-pad. The hacking device is used to disable electronic locks and cameras via a mini-game that requires matching a rotating sequence of colored nodes. The game’s interface includes a minimap in the upper-right corner, showing the layout of the current floor and the locations of security guards (red dots) and objectives (yellow markers). A threat indicator at the top of the screen changes color from green (undetected) to yellow (suspicious) to red (alarmed). The player can save progress at designated break rooms, which are marked on the map. There is no manual save function outside of these rooms.
