Description

TapVaders is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up video game developed by the independent studio PixelForge Games and released in 2023 for personal computers and mobile platforms. The game is a direct homage to the classic arcade shooter Space Invaders, reimagined with modern pixel art graphics and a chiptune soundtrack. The narrative places the player as the commander of a lone starfighter defending Earth from an escalating invasion of alien forces known as the Vaders. The invasion is depicted across multiple waves, each introducing new enemy types with distinct movement patterns and attack behaviors. The visual design employs a limited color palette of neon blues, purples, and greens against a black starfield, creating a retro-futuristic aesthetic. The game features a single-player campaign with a fixed number of levels, each culminating in a boss encounter. A scoring system tracks points for each enemy destroyed, with multipliers awarded for consecutive kills without taking damage. The game does not include a multiplayer mode or online leaderboards, focusing instead on a self-contained arcade experience.

Instructions

Gameplay and controls are structured around a single-screen arena where the player's ship moves horizontally along the bottom edge. The player controls the ship using the left and right arrow keys on a keyboard, or by tilting a mobile device left and right via its accelerometer. The ship fires projectiles upward automatically at a fixed rate, with no manual fire button required. The primary objective is to eliminate all enemies in a wave before they descend to the bottom of the screen, which results in a game over. Enemies move in formation, periodically diving toward the player in a zigzag pattern. The player can activate a temporary shield by pressing the spacebar on keyboard or tapping the screen on mobile, which absorbs one hit but has a cooldown period of five seconds. Power-ups appear randomly after destroying certain enemies, including a spread-shot upgrade that fires three projectiles simultaneously and a speed boost that increases horizontal movement velocity. The game ends when the player's ship is hit three times, with no continues or checkpoints. A high score is saved locally after each session.
