Description
Tangled Climber Escape is a single-player puzzle-platform video game developed by independent studio Knot Games and released in 2023 for personal computers and mobile devices. The game presents a vertical climbing challenge set within a series of procedurally generated, vine-choked towers. The player controls a character who must ascend through these structures while managing a constantly growing and tangling rope that is attached to the character’s harness. The primary objective is to reach the top of each tower to unlock an exit portal, while avoiding environmental hazards such as thorny vines, crumbling ledges, and falling debris. The game’s central mechanic involves the rope, which lengthens as the player climbs and can become entangled with protruding hooks, gears, and other static elements within the tower. If the rope becomes too tangled or reaches its maximum length, the character is pulled back down, resulting in a failed ascent. The visual aesthetic employs a muted color palette with high-contrast indicators for interactive objects. The game features a scoring system based on height reached, time taken, and the number of tangles avoided, with leaderboards for each procedurally generated tower seed.
Instructions
The player controls the character using directional inputs. On a keyboard, the W or Up Arrow key initiates a jump, while A and D or Left and Right Arrow keys control horizontal movement across ledges and platforms. The mouse or touch input is used to aim and deploy a grappling hook, which attaches to designated anchor points on the walls and ceilings. The grappling hook is the primary tool for managing the rope; the player must release the hook at specific moments to prevent the rope from looping around obstacles. The rope automatically extends when the character climbs upward and retracts when descending. A tension meter is displayed on the left side of the screen, showing the current strain on the rope. If the meter reaches the red zone, the rope will snap, ending the climb. The player can manually cut the rope by pressing the Spacebar, but this consumes a limited supply of rope segments, which are collected as items within the tower. The game also includes a slow-motion mode activated by holding the Shift key, allowing precise timing for hook releases and jumps. The interface displays the current floor number, rope length, and remaining rope segments in the top corners of the screen. No pause menu is available during active climbing; the game only pauses when the player reaches a safe platform or the exit portal.
