Description

Spooky Slider is a single-player puzzle game developed by independent studio Hollow Lantern Games and released in October 2023 for personal computers and mobile devices. The game is set in a haunted mansion rendered in a muted, hand-drawn art style with a limited color palette of grays, deep purples, and pale greens. The core objective involves navigating a small, ghost-like character through a series of increasingly complex, grid-based rooms. Each room is populated with static obstacles such as furniture, spectral barriers, and animated hazards like floating candles or shifting floor tiles. The player must manipulate the environment by sliding specific objects—including bookcases, rugs, and statues—to create a clear path to the exit door. The game features a total of 80 levels divided into four thematic wings of the mansion, each introducing a new environmental mechanic, such as crumbling floors or reversible gravity zones. A scoring system tracks the number of moves taken per level, with a par score displayed for each puzzle. The game does not include a narrative or dialogue; progression is purely mechanical. The soundtrack consists of ambient drone tones and occasional creaking sound effects, with no musical melody. The game has been noted for its minimalist interface and lack of any tutorial text, relying entirely on visual cues and trial-and-error learning.

Instructions

Gameplay and controls are based on a turn-based sliding puzzle system. The player controls a single character, represented as a small, translucent orb, which occupies one square of a grid at a time. The player moves the character by clicking or tapping an adjacent empty square; the character moves one square per action. The primary interaction is with movable objects, which are distinguished by a faint white outline. To slide an object, the player must position the character directly adjacent to the object on the side opposite the desired direction of movement. The player then clicks or taps the object itself. This action pushes the object one square in the direction away from the character, provided the target square is empty and not blocked by a wall or another immovable object. Objects cannot be pulled. The character cannot occupy the same square as any object or hazard. Hazards, such as spectral flames or crumbling tiles, are triggered when the character steps onto their square, resulting in an immediate level reset. The game interface displays a move counter in the upper-left corner and a reset button in the upper-right corner. There is no pause menu; the game is paused automatically when the window loses focus. On mobile devices, controls are identical, using touch input for both character movement and object sliding. The game does not support keyboard controls. Each level is completed when the character reaches the exit door, which is a distinct, glowing portal on the grid. Upon completion, the player is shown the number of moves used and the par score before automatically advancing to the next level.
