Description
SpaceShip Fight is a two-dimensional space combat simulation released in 1983 for the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum platforms. The game places the player in command of a single starfighter tasked with defending a sector of space against waves of enemy spacecraft. The player’s vessel is depicted from a top-down perspective, moving across a scrolling starfield background. Enemy ships appear in increasing numbers and with varying movement patterns, including straight-line attacks, weaving trajectories, and coordinated formations. The player’s ship is equipped with a forward-firing laser cannon and a limited supply of smart bombs that clear the screen of all enemies. Collision with an enemy ship or its projectiles results in the loss of a life. The game ends when all lives are depleted. The objective is to achieve the highest possible score by destroying enemies and surviving as long as possible. The game features a single-player mode only. No narrative or character development is present. The visual design uses simple vector-style graphics with a monochrome palette on the ZX Spectrum and a limited color set on the Commodore 64. Sound effects consist of basic beeps and explosions generated by the system’s internal speaker.
Instructions
The player controls the starfighter using a joystick or keyboard. The joystick is the primary input device. Moving the joystick left or right moves the ship horizontally across the screen. Moving the joystick up or down moves the ship vertically. The ship does not rotate; movement is restricted to four cardinal directions. The fire button on the joystick activates the laser cannon. Holding the fire button produces a continuous stream of laser bolts. The keyboard controls are as follows: the cursor keys or the Z, X, K, and M keys are used for directional movement. The space bar fires the laser cannon. The smart bomb is activated by pressing the B key on the keyboard or by pressing the fire button while simultaneously pressing a designated key, depending on the specific platform version. The smart bomb has a limited number of uses, displayed as a counter on the screen. The player’s current score and remaining lives are displayed at the top of the screen. There is no pause function. The game begins immediately upon loading and continues until all lives are lost. No save or load features are present.
