Description
Slap Sahur is a digital game developed by an independent Indonesian studio, released in 2023 for mobile platforms. The game is set during the pre-dawn meal (sahur) period of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan. The core premise involves a player character who must wake up and prepare for sahur while being repeatedly interrupted by a family member, typically a mother or sibling, who slaps the player to ensure they do not fall back asleep. The game simulates the cultural practice of waking others for sahur, often through physical nudges or slaps, in a humorous and exaggerated manner. The visual style employs simple 2D cartoon graphics with bright, saturated colors. The game’s objective is to complete a series of sahur-related tasks, such as eating, drinking, and praying, within a limited time frame while avoiding the slaps that reduce the player’s energy or focus. The game includes multiple levels representing different days of Ramadan, with increasing difficulty and more aggressive slap patterns. Sound effects include exaggerated slap noises, alarm clocks, and ambient kitchen sounds. The game has been noted for its cultural specificity and its reflection of a common social ritual in Indonesian households.
Instructions
Gameplay and controls are based on a single-touch interface. The player controls a character lying on a bed or sitting at a dining table. The primary action is tapping the screen to perform tasks: tapping a plate of food initiates eating, tapping a glass initiates drinking, and tapping a prayer mat initiates a short prayer animation. The player must complete these tasks in a specific order displayed on a checklist at the top of the screen. A timer bar depletes over the duration of the sahur period. The main challenge comes from a family member who appears from the side of the screen and delivers a slap. The slap is indicated by a brief visual flash and a sound cue. To avoid a slap, the player must tap a shield icon that appears on the character’s head when the family member is approaching. The shield icon has a cooldown period after each use. Each successful slap reduces the player’s energy meter, displayed as a heart icon. If the energy meter reaches zero, the game ends. The player can collect power-ups, such as a coffee cup that temporarily increases energy regeneration or a clock that pauses the timer. The game uses a level-based progression, with each level representing one day of Ramadan. The difficulty increases as the family member’s slap speed and frequency increase, and new tasks, such as washing dishes or putting on a headscarf, are introduced. The game ends after completing 30 levels, corresponding to the full month of Ramadan.
