Description
Shipwreck Scrub is a single-player survival simulation game released in 2023 by independent developer Hollow Hull Studios. The game is set on a remote, uncharted island in the Pacific Ocean, where the player character is the sole survivor of a maritime disaster. The primary objective is to manage limited resources, repair a damaged vessel, and escape the island before the onset of an approaching typhoon season. The environment is procedurally generated, featuring a dynamic ecosystem with variable weather patterns, tidal cycles, and wildlife behavior. The game emphasizes realism in resource degradation, with tools and materials losing durability over time due to saltwater corrosion and sun exposure. The narrative is delivered through environmental storytelling, including scattered logs, wreckage from previous ships, and radio transmissions from distant stations. The game does not feature a traditional health bar; instead, the player monitors hydration, caloric intake, and body temperature, which are affected by the island’s tropical climate and the player’s activity level. The title “Scrub” refers to the dense coastal vegetation that must be cleared to access inland resources and hidden caches. The game has been noted for its lack of hand-holding tutorials, requiring the player to deduce crafting recipes and survival strategies through trial and error.
Instructions
Gameplay is controlled through a third-person perspective with a fixed camera angle. The player moves the character using the W, A, S, and D keys. The mouse controls the camera rotation and interaction cursor. Left-clicking on an object initiates an action, such as picking up a coconut, cutting a branch, or examining a piece of wreckage. Right-clicking opens a context menu for advanced actions, including combining items or dismantling structures. The inventory is accessed by pressing the I key. Items are stored in a grid-based system, and stacking is limited by weight and volume. Crafting is performed by dragging items from the inventory onto a designated crafting slot in the interface. The player can build shelters, fires, and water collection systems using blueprints found in the environment. The repair of the shipwreck requires specific components, such as marine-grade plywood, copper wiring, and engine parts, which are scattered across the island and underwater reefs. The player can swim by pressing the Spacebar while in water, but stamina is depleted rapidly. The game saves automatically at dawn each in-game day. There is no pause function; time continues to pass even when the inventory menu is open. The player can die from dehydration, starvation, hypothermia, or animal attacks, resulting in a permanent loss of progress unless a manual save file was created via the Escape key menu.
