Description
Shadows of the Forest is a single-player survival horror game released in 2023 by independent developer Hollow Grove Studios. The game is set in the fictional Blackwood National Park, a dense, temperate rainforest in the Pacific Northwest. The narrative follows a park ranger, Alex Mercer, who becomes stranded after a helicopter crash during a routine patrol. The primary antagonist is a nocturnal, shapeshifting entity referred to as the "Wendigo," which is capable of mimicking human voices and animal calls. The game world is procedurally generated, ensuring each playthrough features a unique layout of trails, caves, and abandoned structures. The core objective is to locate three radio transmitters scattered across the forest to signal for rescue, while managing limited resources such as batteries, food, and medical supplies. The game employs a dynamic day-night cycle; daytime offers relative safety for exploration and scavenging, while nighttime forces the player into stealth and evasion as the Wendigo becomes active. The visual design relies heavily on environmental storytelling, with notes, audio logs, and disturbed campsites revealing the fates of previous visitors. The sound design is a critical component, utilizing binaural audio to create a three-dimensional auditory space where the player must distinguish between natural forest sounds and the Wendigo’s deceptive calls. The game has no combat mechanics; the player cannot kill or harm the Wendigo, only delay or avoid it.
Instructions
Gameplay is presented from a first-person perspective. The player character moves using the W, A, S, and D keys. The mouse controls the camera view and is used to interact with objects via left-click. The right mouse button activates a flashlight, which consumes battery power displayed on the HUD. The player can sprint by holding the Shift key, but this increases noise and stamina drain, indicated by a circular stamina meter. The inventory is accessed by pressing the Tab key, allowing the player to examine, combine, or use items. The map is opened with the M key, showing the player’s current location and discovered landmarks. The player can crouch using the Ctrl key to reduce noise and visibility, which is essential for evading the Wendigo. The Wendigo’s proximity is indicated by a visual distortion on the screen’s edges and an increasing heartbeat sound. When the Wendigo is near, the player must hold their breath by pressing the Spacebar to avoid detection. The game saves automatically at campfires, which also serve as safe zones to craft items using collected materials. The player can listen for environmental cues by pressing the E key to focus hearing, which amplifies distant sounds but drains stamina. The objective is tracked via a compass at the top of the screen, pointing toward the nearest active radio transmitter. The game ends when the player successfully activates all three transmitters and reaches the extraction point, or when the Wendigo catches the player, resulting in a permanent death and a restart of the procedurally generated world.
