Description
Royal Chess Arena is a digital strategy game that combines traditional chess rules with a competitive, arena-style tournament structure. Developed by independent studio Lattice Games and released in 2023, the game is available on Windows, macOS, and mobile platforms. The core premise involves players controlling a chess army in a series of matches against AI opponents or other human players, with each victory advancing the player through a ranked ladder system. The game features a medieval fantasy aesthetic, with pieces designed as animated characters representing knights, mages, and monarchs. The arena setting is a circular stone platform surrounded by a digital audience, with visual effects for captures and checkmate sequences. The game includes a single-player campaign mode with 50 pre-set challenges, a local multiplayer mode for two players on the same device, and an online ranked mode with matchmaking based on Elo ratings. Royal Chess Arena does not alter standard chess movement rules; all pieces move according to FIDE regulations. The game tracks player statistics such as win-loss ratio, average game length, and most-used opening moves. A built-in replay system allows review of completed matches. The game supports multiple languages and includes accessibility options for colorblind players.
Instructions
Gameplay in Royal Chess Arena follows standard chess turn-based mechanics. Each player controls sixteen pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. The objective is to checkmate the opponent’s king. A turn consists of selecting a piece by tapping or clicking on it, then moving it to a valid square highlighted on the board. The game enforces all standard rules, including castling, en passant, and pawn promotion. Controls are optimized for both mouse and touch interfaces. On desktop, left-click selects a piece, and a second left-click on a highlighted square confirms the move. Right-click deselects a piece. On mobile, a single tap selects a piece, and a second tap on a valid square moves it. A long press on a piece displays its possible moves as translucent overlays. The interface includes a move history panel on the right side, a timer for each player in timed modes, and a resign button. Players can undo a move only in single-player mode against AI. The game offers three time control options: blitz (5 minutes per player), rapid (15 minutes), and classical (30 minutes with increment). Online matches use a server-based turn system with a 60-second disconnect grace period. The arena mode presents a bracket of 16 players, with each match requiring a win to advance. Draws are resolved by a threefold repetition rule or a 50-move rule enforced by the game engine.
