Description

Pumpkin Dungeon Of Doom is a single-player, top-down perspective action-adventure game developed by independent studio Grinning Gourd Games and released in 2023. The game is set within a procedurally generated subterranean labyrinth themed around autumnal harvest motifs. The player character, a sentient pumpkin named Jack, is trapped within the dungeon and must navigate its five distinct biomes: the Gourd Grove, the Rotting Root Cellar, the Searing Squash Caverns, the Haunted Harvest Hall, and the final chamber, the Doom Core. Each biome features a unique color palette and environmental hazards, such as slippery patches of pumpkin pulp in the Grove or falling stalactites in the Caverns. The primary objective is to collect three scattered fragments of the Harvest Key, which are guarded by biome-specific bosses. The game employs a permadeath system; upon the player character’s defeat, the dungeon layout is completely regenerated, and all collected items are lost. A persistent upgrade system exists outside the dungeon, allowing players to unlock permanent stat boosts for future runs using currency earned from defeating enemies. The narrative is delivered through environmental storytelling and brief, non-interactive cutscenes triggered upon entering new biomes. The game’s soundtrack consists of a single, looping orchestral piece that increases in tempo as the player’s health decreases.

Instructions

Gameplay and controls are centered on real-time movement and combat. The player character moves in eight directions using the W, A, S, and D keys. The mouse cursor controls the direction of attacks and abilities. The left mouse button performs a standard melee attack with a scythe, which has a short range and a one-second cooldown. The right mouse button activates a charged throw of a pumpkin seed projectile, which consumes stamina. Stamina is represented by a yellow bar beneath the health bar and regenerates slowly over time. The spacebar executes a dodge roll, granting temporary invulnerability frames for 0.3 seconds. The number keys 1 through 4 correspond to four inventory slots for consumable items, such as healing gourds or explosive corn. The E key interacts with objects, including levers, treasure chests, and boss doors. The Tab key opens the map, which reveals only explored areas. The Escape key pauses the game and opens the settings menu. The interface displays a health bar, a stamina bar, a current currency counter, and a mini-map in the upper-right corner. Enemy types include animated scarecrows, giant spiders, and spectral farmers. Boss fights require pattern recognition; each boss telegraphs attacks with a visual flash or a sound cue. The game does not include a tutorial level; all mechanics are introduced through contextual prompts that appear on screen when the player first encounters a relevant object or enemy.
