Description
Point to Merge is a puzzle video game developed by the independent studio Noodlecake Games, released in 2023 for mobile platforms (iOS and Android). The game presents a minimalist, abstract visual style, featuring a grid-based playing field populated with colored geometric shapes, primarily circles and squares. The core objective is to clear the board by merging identical shapes into a single, larger shape of the same color. Each level introduces a finite number of shapes arranged in a specific pattern. The player must strategically combine shapes to reduce the total count, with the goal of leaving zero shapes on the board. The game employs a scoring system based on the number of moves taken and the efficiency of merges. Levels increase in complexity by adding more shapes, introducing obstacles such as immovable blocks, and requiring specific merge sequences. The game does not include a narrative or character progression; its focus is entirely on spatial reasoning and combinatorial logic.
Instructions
Gameplay and controls are executed entirely through touch input on a touchscreen interface. The player interacts with the grid by tapping a shape to select it. Once selected, the shape is highlighted. The player then taps an adjacent shape of the same color and identical size to initiate a merge. The two selected shapes disappear from their original positions, and a single, larger shape of the same color appears in the location of the second tapped shape. This new shape occupies a single grid cell, effectively doubling the size of the original shape. Merging is only possible between two shapes that are orthogonally adjacent (sharing a side, not a corner). Diagonal adjacency does not allow a merge. The game provides a visual indicator, such as a brief animation or a color change, to confirm a successful merge. If a player taps a shape that cannot merge with any adjacent shape, the selection is canceled. The game includes an undo button, allowing the player to reverse the last move. A move counter is displayed at the top of the screen, tracking the total number of merges performed. The level is completed when the grid contains no remaining shapes. If the player cannot make any further legal merges, the level is considered failed, and the player must restart from the beginning of that level.
