Description

Pill Puzzler is a tile-matching puzzle video game developed by Gimmick Games and released in 2003 for the Game Boy Advance. The game presents a grid-based playing field where the player manipulates falling pairs of colored pills. The objective is to clear pills from the board by aligning four or more pills of the same color in a contiguous horizontal or vertical line. The game features a single-player campaign mode with escalating difficulty, a versus mode for two players via link cable, and a time-attack mode. The visual design employs a clinical, laboratory aesthetic, with pill capsules rendered in bright primary colors against a dark background. The soundtrack consists of electronic, repetitive loops that increase in tempo as the player progresses. The game is classified as a falling-block puzzle game, sharing core mechanics with titles such as Dr. Mario and Puyo Puyo, but distinguishes itself through a unique "virus" system where colored viruses occupy cells and must be eliminated by matching pills adjacent to them. The game does not include a narrative or character-driven story.

Instructions

The player controls a pair of two colored pills falling from the top of a 6x12 grid. The left and right directional buttons move the pill pair horizontally. The up directional button rotates the pill pair 90 degrees clockwise. The down directional button accelerates the fall speed of the pill pair. The A button performs a hard drop, instantly placing the pill pair at the lowest available position. The B button performs a soft drop, increasing the fall speed temporarily. The pill pair consists of two pills, each of a different color or the same color. The player must position the pill pair so that the pills land on empty cells or adjacent to existing pills. When four or more pills of the same color form a straight line horizontally or vertically, those pills are removed from the grid. Any pills or viruses above the cleared area fall down to fill the gaps. The game ends when a new pill pair cannot be placed because the grid is full to the top. In the campaign mode, colored viruses are pre-placed on the grid. A virus is eliminated only when a matching pill is placed directly adjacent to it, and the resulting match removes both the pill and the virus. The player must clear all viruses to advance to the next level. The versus mode uses a split-screen display, and clearing pills sends "garbage" pills to the opponent's grid. The time-attack mode challenges the player to clear a set number of viruses as quickly as possible. No pause menu is available during versus mode.
