Number Quest

Number Quest is a single-player puzzle-adventure game released in 2023 by independent developer Arithmancy Studios. The game is set in a procedurally generated world called the Numeric Expanse, a landscape composed entirely of geometric shapes and numerical symbols. The player assumes the role of a cipher, a being tasked with restoring balance to the Expanse by solving mathematical and logic-based challenges. The narrative is delivered through environmental storytelling and abstract visual sequences, with no spoken or written dialogue. The core objective is to collect and combine numerical fragments, known as Digits, to unlock pathways and defeat entities called Nulls, which represent mathematical errors or voids. The game features a minimalist art style with a monochromatic palette accented by specific colors for different number types. Sound design relies on ambient tones and synthesized chimes that correspond to solved equations. Number Quest has been noted for its difficulty curve, which increases through the introduction of prime numbers, modular arithmetic, and geometric sequences. The game does not include a traditional health system; failure results in the player being reset to the last solved puzzle node.

Gameplay is controlled through a combination of keyboard and mouse inputs. The player character moves through the 2D side-scrolling environment using the W, A, S, D keys. The mouse cursor is used to interact with Digits and environmental objects. Left-clicking on a Digit selects it, adding it to a temporary inventory bar at the bottom of the screen. Right-clicking deselects a Digit. To solve a puzzle, the player must drag selected Digits onto a target node, which displays a required equation or sum. The game provides no hints; the player must deduce the correct combination through trial and error. The spacebar activates a "Scan" function, which highlights all interactable Digits within a short radius. The E key performs a "Combine" action, merging two selected Digits into a new value if their sum or product matches a hidden rule. The Q key drops all currently held Digits back into the environment. The Escape key opens a pause menu, which allows the player to save the game or exit. The game does not support controller input. The interface displays a counter in the upper-left corner showing the total number of Digits collected, and a timer in the upper-right corner tracking the elapsed time for the current session. There is no in-game tutorial; all controls are listed in a separate PDF manual included with the game files.
