Description

Number Kids is an educational video game designed for children aged three to seven years. The game focuses on developing foundational numeracy skills through interactive activities. It was developed by a team of early childhood educators and software engineers, and first released in 2018 for tablet devices and personal computers. The game presents a series of mini-games set within a colorful, two-dimensional environment populated by animated animal characters. Each mini-game targets a specific mathematical concept, including number recognition, counting, basic addition and subtraction, shape identification, and pattern sequencing. The game does not include any competitive elements, time limits, or failure states; instead, it employs a positive reinforcement system where correct actions are rewarded with visual animations and sound effects. The interface is designed with large, clearly defined touch targets and high-contrast visuals to accommodate young users. The game contains no advertisements, in-app purchases, or external links. It supports multiple language options and includes a parent dashboard that tracks a child’s progress across different skill areas. The game’s content is aligned with common core state standards for early mathematics education.

Instructions

Gameplay is initiated by selecting a character from the main menu. The player then navigates a map screen where each location corresponds to a different mini-game. Interaction is primarily touch-based on tablets or mouse-based on computers. In the number recognition activity, the player taps on a displayed numeral after hearing its name spoken aloud. For counting exercises, the player drags a finger or cursor across a group of objects to count them, then selects the correct number from a set of options. In addition and subtraction tasks, the player manipulates virtual objects on screen, such as apples or blocks, to solve simple equations presented as visual problems. Shape identification requires the player to match a shape outline by dragging a corresponding shape into place. Pattern sequencing presents a row of colored shapes where the player must select the next item in the sequence from a choice of three. Controls are limited to tapping, dragging, and selecting. Each mini-game provides immediate auditory and visual feedback. A correct action triggers a short celebratory animation and a positive sound. An incorrect action results in a gentle vibration or a neutral sound, and the player is prompted to try again. The player can exit any mini-game at any time by tapping a home button located in the upper left corner of the screen. The game automatically saves progress after each completed activity.
