Description
Nullpulse Runner is a single-player, first-person endless runner video game developed by the independent studio Hollow Circuit and released in 2023 for Windows and macOS. The game is set within a procedurally generated digital landscape known as the Nullpulse, a monochromatic, grid-based environment that shifts and reconfigures itself as the player progresses. The narrative premise involves a data entity, referred to as the Runner, attempting to escape a collapsing server core. The visual aesthetic is defined by stark black-and-white line art, with occasional red highlights indicating hazards or critical path elements. The soundtrack consists of a dynamic, glitch-influenced electronic score that responds to the player’s speed and proximity to obstacles. The game’s core mechanic revolves around maintaining forward momentum while navigating a series of geometric platforms, walls, and gaps. Failure occurs when the Runner collides with an obstacle or falls off the path, resulting in a reset to the beginning of the current run. There are no save points, checkpoints, or persistent upgrades; each run is a self-contained attempt to achieve the highest possible distance score. The game includes a global leaderboard that records the top distances achieved by all players.
Instructions
Gameplay and controls are designed for keyboard and mouse input. The player character moves forward automatically at a constant speed. The primary control is the mouse, used to steer the Runner left or right by moving the cursor horizontally across the screen. The character follows the cursor’s position relative to the center of the playfield. To jump, the player presses the spacebar. A single press initiates a jump; holding the spacebar does not extend the jump duration. The jump height and distance are fixed. To perform a slide, the player presses the left Shift key. Sliding reduces the character’s hitbox height, allowing passage under low-hanging obstacles. The slide lasts for a fixed duration of 0.5 seconds and cannot be canceled early. The game does not feature a pause function; any interruption of input results in an immediate collision and run termination. The interface displays a single numerical counter in the upper-left corner, indicating the distance traveled in arbitrary units. A red warning indicator flashes at the screen’s edge when an obstacle is within 0.3 seconds of impact. No tutorial or training mode is provided; all mechanics must be learned through repeated play. The game offers no difficulty settings, accessibility options, or control remapping.
