Description
Music Night Battle: Rhythm Game is a competitive music video game developed by Harmonix Interactive and published by Sega in 2023 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The game centers on a fictional global tournament where players control avatars representing different musical genres, competing in head-to-head rhythm battles. The soundtrack features over 150 licensed tracks spanning pop, electronic, rock, and classical genres, each remixed into distinct battle versions. The visual design employs a neon-lit cyberpunk aesthetic, with stages that dynamically react to the music and player performance. The game supports both local multiplayer for up to four players and online ranked matchmaking. A single-player campaign follows a narrative of an underground music league, with cutscenes rendered in cel-shaded animation. The game received a Metacritic score of 87, praised for its precise timing mechanics and diverse track list, though criticized for its steep learning curve.
Instructions
Gameplay in Music Night Battle: Rhythm Game is structured around turn-based rhythm duels. Each player selects a character and a song. During a round, notes scroll horizontally from both sides of the screen toward a central target zone. Players must press corresponding buttons on a standard controller: the left analog stick or D-pad for directional notes, and the face buttons (X, Y, A, B on Xbox; Square, Triangle, Cross, Circle on PlayStation) for action notes. The primary objective is to hit notes in time with the beat, earning points for accuracy. Perfect hits fill a special meter, while misses deplete it. When the meter is full, a player can activate a "Battle Burst" by pressing the right trigger, which sends a wave of disruptive notes to the opponent’s lane, forcing them to hit additional obstacles or lose health. Each player has a health bar; depleting the opponent’s health to zero wins the round. Matches are best of three rounds. Controls are mapped as follows: left bumper activates a defensive shield to block incoming Battle Burst notes, right bumper triggers the Battle Burst, and the start button pauses the game. The game also includes a practice mode with adjustable speed and note density, and a tutorial that explains timing windows for "Perfect," "Great," "Good," and "Miss" ratings.
