Description
Monster Traps Escape is a single-player puzzle and strategy game released in 2023 by independent developer Hollow Cog Studios. The game is set in a procedurally generated underground labyrinth where the player character, an unnamed explorer, must navigate a series of interconnected chambers while avoiding hostile creatures referred to as "monsters." The primary objective is not to defeat these monsters but to outmaneuver them using a limited set of environmental traps. Each level presents a closed arena with a fixed number of exits, which are locked until the player activates a series of pressure plates or levers. The monsters exhibit distinct behavioral patterns: some patrol fixed paths, others react to sound, and a few are attracted to light sources. The game employs a top-down perspective with a muted color palette, emphasizing visibility of trap triggers and monster movement. The narrative is minimal, conveyed through short text logs found in hidden rooms, detailing the failed expeditions of previous explorers. The game features 60 levels across four difficulty tiers, with no save points within a level; failure resets the player to the start of that level. A time-attack mode is available after completing the main campaign, recording completion times for each level.
Instructions
The player controls the explorer using the keyboard. The W, A, S, and D keys move the character up, left, down, and right, respectively. The character moves one tile per key press in a grid-based movement system. The spacebar activates or interacts with objects directly adjacent to the player, such as levers, pressure plates, or trap triggers. The E key picks up and places portable items, including decoy flares and stone blocks, which can be used to redirect monster paths. The mouse is used to look around the current chamber by clicking and dragging, but does not control movement. The game interface displays a minimap in the upper-right corner, showing explored tiles and the location of known traps and exits. A trap inventory bar at the bottom of the screen lists the number and type of traps available for the current level, such as pitfall covers, spike walls, and net launchers. To deploy a trap, the player presses the number key (1 through 4) corresponding to the trap slot, then clicks on an adjacent empty tile. Traps are single-use and must be triggered by the player or a monster walking over them. The player cannot attack monsters directly; contact with a monster results in immediate level failure. The escape key pauses the game and opens the menu, allowing the player to restart the level or return to the level select screen.
