Description
Monster Time is a single-player real-time strategy and resource management game developed by Clockwork Pixel Studios and released in 2023. The game is set in a fictional medieval kingdom where a catastrophic event, known as the "Chime of Chaos," has caused the boundaries between the mortal world and a dimension of monstrous entities to collapse. The player assumes the role of a "Warden," a specialized official tasked with containing and managing these creatures. The primary objective is to construct and maintain a fortified compound, known as the "Sanctuary," which serves as both a prison and a research facility for captured monsters. The game world is divided into distinct biomes, each hosting unique monster species with specific behavioral patterns, dietary needs, and environmental requirements. The narrative progresses through a series of in-game events triggered by the player's actions, such as monster escapes, resource shortages, and external threats from human factions who oppose the Warden's methods. The game features a day-night cycle that directly influences monster activity levels, with nocturnal species becoming more aggressive and requiring additional containment measures after sunset. The visual style employs a dark fantasy aesthetic with a muted color palette, emphasizing the grim atmosphere of the setting. The soundtrack is composed of ambient, low-frequency tones that shift in intensity based on the player's current crisis level.
Instructions
Gameplay in Monster Time is divided into two primary modes: Construction and Crisis Management. In Construction mode, the player uses a point-and-click interface to place structures within the Sanctuary grid. Key structures include containment cells, feeding stations, research labs, and defensive walls. Each structure requires specific resources—stone, wood, and a currency called "Essence"—which are gathered by assigning worker units to resource nodes on the map. The player controls a cursor that can select individual units or structures by left-clicking. Right-clicking on a selected unit issues movement or task commands. The interface includes a top bar displaying current resource counts, a population cap for monsters, and a "Chaos Meter" that indicates overall instability. Crisis Management mode activates automatically when a monster escapes or an external attack occurs. During this mode, the game pauses to allow the player to assess the situation via a tactical overlay. The player must then deploy specialized "Handler" units to recapture monsters using tranquilizer darts or lure them back with bait items. Handlers are controlled by selecting them and clicking on the target monster. The player can also activate defensive turrets by clicking on their icons in the bottom toolbar. The keyboard shortcuts include the spacebar to pause and unpause the game, the number keys 1 through 4 to quickly select pre-assigned control groups of units, and the escape key to access the main menu. The game provides a tutorial that introduces these controls sequentially during the first hour of play.
