Description
Monster High Spooky Fashion is a dress-up and styling video game released for the Nintendo DS handheld console in 2011. Developed by Torus Games and published by THQ, the game is based on the Monster High franchise, a line of fashion dolls depicting the teenage children of classic monsters. The game’s narrative centers on the player character, a new student at Monster High, who must prepare for a series of themed fashion shows and social events. The objective is to earn the title of “Frightmare” by completing challenges, collecting outfits, and managing the protagonist’s schedule across a week of in-game days. The game features a cast of characters from the franchise, including Draculaura, Frankie Stein, and Clawdeen Wolf, who act as friends and mentors. The visual style employs a bright, cartoonish aesthetic consistent with the doll line, with character models rendered in 2D against static backgrounds. The game integrates elements of time management, as the player must allocate time between shopping, styling, and attending events. Sound design includes a synthesized soundtrack and voice clips for character interactions. The game is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB.
Instructions
Gameplay in Monster High Spooky Fashion is divided into two primary modes: a story mode and a free play mode. In story mode, the player progresses through a seven-day schedule. Each day consists of a morning and afternoon session, during which the player selects an activity from a menu. Activities include visiting the Creepateria to socialize, shopping at the Coffin Bean or the Mad Science Lab for clothing and accessories, and practicing makeup or hairstyles in the player’s dormitory. The core gameplay loop involves selecting outfits and applying makeup to meet specific style requirements for each event, such as “Gothic” or “Punk.” The player uses the DS stylus to drag and drop clothing items onto the character model. Makeup application requires the player to trace patterns on the character’s face using the stylus. Success in these mini-games is judged by a meter that fills based on accuracy and speed. The player’s performance in styling and events earns “Frightmares,” which unlock new items and locations. The game also includes a friendship system; interacting with other characters through dialogue choices affects their disposition and unlocks exclusive items. Free play mode allows unrestricted access to all unlocked clothing, accessories, and makeup options without time constraints. Controls are entirely touch-based. The player navigates menus by tapping icons. During styling, items are selected from a sidebar and placed onto the character by tapping the desired body part. Makeup mini-games require the player to hold the stylus and trace lines on the touch screen. The D-pad and face buttons are not used for primary gameplay.
