Description
Merge Happy Planets! is a puzzle-strategy video game developed by a small independent studio, released in 2023 for mobile platforms. The game is set in a two-dimensional space environment where the player manages a collection of celestial bodies. The core objective involves combining identical planets to create larger, more advanced celestial objects, progressing from small asteroids to gas giants and eventually to stars. Each planet type possesses distinct visual characteristics and contributes to an overall score multiplier. The game features a grid-based play area where planets are placed and merged. A resource system tracks the player's progress, with each successful merge generating points that unlock new planet tiers. The game includes a limited number of moves or a time constraint per level, requiring strategic planning to achieve high scores. No narrative or character-driven elements are present; the focus is entirely on the mechanical process of merging and optimizing spatial arrangement. The visual style employs a minimalist, colorful palette with smooth animations for merging events. Sound effects are limited to discrete tones indicating successful merges and level completion.
Instructions
Gameplay and controls are executed through a touch interface. The player interacts with the grid by tapping and dragging individual planets. To perform a merge, the player selects a planet by tapping it, then drags it onto an adjacent grid cell containing an identical planet. Upon release, both planets disappear and a new, larger planet of the next tier appears in the target cell. Planets cannot be moved to empty cells unless a merge is possible; they are locked in place until a valid merge target is adjacent. The grid is populated at the start of each level with a random assortment of low-tier planets. New planets are periodically introduced via a spawn mechanic, appearing in empty cells or at the grid's edge. The player must manage the grid's limited space, as full grids result in a game over. A score counter is displayed at the top of the screen, updating in real-time with each merge. A move counter or timer is also visible, depending on the level type. The game provides a pause menu that allows the player to restart the current level or return to the main menu. No additional control inputs, such as accelerometer or gyroscope functions, are utilized. The interface is designed for single-finger operation, with no multi-touch gestures required.
