Description
Meet The Birds is a digital interactive experience released in 2023, developed by independent studio Featherlight Games. The software is classified as a non-competitive observational simulation, designed for a single user. The primary objective is to identify, document, and learn about a variety of avian species within a procedurally generated temperate forest environment. The game world features a dynamic day-night cycle and seasonal weather patterns that influence bird behavior and migration. The user assumes the role of a field ornithologist equipped with a virtual camera, a field journal, and a pair of binoculars. The environment contains over forty distinct bird species, each modeled with accurate physical characteristics, flight patterns, and vocalizations sourced from real-world ornithological data. The game does not include a scoring system, combat, or time limits. Progression is measured by the completion of a digital field guide, which requires the user to photograph each species in specific behavioral states, such as feeding, nesting, or in flight. The software supports a photo mode that allows for detailed examination of captured images. The sound design utilizes binaural audio to simulate directional bird calls, enhancing the immersion of the forest setting. The game is available on Windows, macOS, and Nintendo Switch platforms.
Instructions
The user controls the character through a third-person perspective using a standard keyboard and mouse or a gamepad. Movement is mapped to the W, A, S, D keys or the left analog stick. The mouse or right analog stick controls the camera view. The right mouse button or the left trigger activates the binoculars, which zooms the view and highlights the name of any bird species within the field of view. The left mouse button or the right trigger operates the camera. To take a photograph, the user must center the bird in the viewfinder and press the capture button. The field journal is accessed by pressing the J key or the Y button. The journal displays a checklist of all species, their known habitats, and the number of photographs taken for each. The user can switch between walking and a slower, quieter crouch mode by pressing the Left Control key or the left thumbstick. The crouch mode reduces noise and prevents scaring birds. A compass at the top of the screen indicates cardinal directions and the location of points of interest, such as known watering holes or nesting sites. The user can fast-forward time by pressing the T key or the right bumper, which accelerates the day-night cycle to observe nocturnal species. The game provides no explicit tutorials; all controls are listed in the pause menu, accessed by pressing the Escape key or the Start button.
