Description

Matching Donuts is a digital puzzle game developed by Sugar Cube Studios and released in 2021 for mobile platforms and personal computers. The game presents a grid-based matching mechanic where players interact with a variety of stylized donut icons. Each donut is distinguished by its color, frosting pattern, and topping, such as sprinkles, chocolate drizzle, or powdered sugar. The objective is to clear the board by selecting pairs of identical donuts, with the grid refilling from the top after each successful match. The game features a single-player mode with over 200 levels, each introducing new obstacles such as locked tiles, time limits, or limited moves. A scoring system awards points based on chain reactions and the speed of matches. The visual design employs a pastel color palette and flat vector art. The game includes no narrative or character progression; the focus remains solely on pattern recognition and spatial reasoning. Sound effects are limited to a soft chime for matches and a click for tile selection. The game is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB.

Instructions

Gameplay and controls are structured around a touch or click interface. On mobile devices, the player taps a donut tile to select it, then taps a second tile to attempt a match. On personal computers, the player uses a mouse to click on tiles. A match is successful only when two selected tiles are identical in appearance and are connected by a path that does not exceed two 90-degree turns. The path must be clear of other tiles. If the path is obstructed, the match fails, and both tiles are deselected. The game provides a visual indicator, a dotted line, showing the valid path when a match is possible. The player can deselect a tile by tapping or clicking it again. A timer or move counter is displayed at the top of the screen, depending on the level. The player can use power-ups, such as a shuffle button that rearranges all tiles, or a hint button that highlights one valid pair. These power-ups are limited per level. The game ends when the timer expires, moves are exhausted, or the board is cleared. A level is completed when all tiles are removed. The interface includes a pause menu, a settings option for sound and music volume, and a level select screen. No keyboard shortcuts are available; all actions are performed through the pointing device.
