Description

Line & Dots is a minimalist puzzle game released in 2023 by independent developer Studio Null. The game presents a single, continuous playfield composed of a grid of small, circular nodes connected by straight line segments. The visual design is monochromatic, typically featuring a dark background with white or light gray lines and dots. The objective is to manipulate the arrangement of these lines and dots to satisfy a set of per-level conditions. Each level presents a unique configuration of nodes and pre-existing line segments. The player is given a limited number of moves or a time constraint to achieve a target pattern, such as forming a specific number of closed loops, connecting all dots into a single continuous path, or eliminating all line crossings. The game contains 120 levels, divided into four thematic chapters that introduce new mechanics, including color-coded nodes that can only connect to matching nodes and nodes that can be moved to new grid positions. No narrative or character elements are present. The game is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms.

Instructions

Gameplay and controls are executed entirely through mouse or touch input. The player interacts with the grid by clicking or tapping on a line segment to remove it, or by clicking on a dot and dragging to a neighboring dot to create a new line. The grid is fixed; dots cannot be moved unless a specific level mechanic allows it. The interface displays a move counter or a timer in the upper left corner, and the current level objective is shown as a text prompt at the top of the screen. A level is completed when the objective is met, triggering a brief animation and progression to the next level. The player can undo the last action by pressing the 'Z' key or a dedicated undo button in the lower right corner. The game can be paused at any time by pressing the 'Escape' key, which brings up a menu allowing the player to restart the current level, return to the level select screen, or quit the application. No keyboard shortcuts exist beyond the undo and pause functions. The game provides no hints or tutorials beyond the initial level, which demonstrates the basic click-and-drag mechanic.
