Description

KingRoly's Labyrinth is a single-player puzzle-adventure game developed by independent studio Hollow Cog Interactive and released in 2023. The game is set within a shifting, non-Euclidean maze known as the Labyrinth of Roly, a sentient construct that rearranges its corridors and chambers in response to the player's actions. The player controls a character referred to as the Wanderer, who awakens at the maze's entrance with no memory of their past. The primary objective is to navigate through a series of procedurally generated levels, each containing a central artifact called a Memory Shard. Collecting all shards across multiple layers of the labyrinth unlocks the game's conclusion. The environment is rendered in a muted, low-polygon art style with a limited color palette of grays, blues, and ochres. Sound design relies on ambient drones and occasional metallic echoes, with no musical score. The game features no dialogue or text-based narrative; story elements are conveyed solely through environmental changes and the arrangement of obstacles. KingRoly's Labyrinth has been noted for its lack of hand-holding, requiring players to deduce mechanics through observation and trial.

Instructions

Gameplay and controls are centered on movement and interaction within a three-dimensional space. The player character is controlled using a standard keyboard and mouse or a gamepad. Movement is mapped to the W, A, S, D keys or the left analog stick. The camera is controlled by the mouse or the right analog stick, with no option for automatic camera adjustment. The primary interaction button, bound to the left mouse button or the A button on a gamepad, allows the Wanderer to push or pull certain blocks, activate pressure plates, and retrieve Memory Shards. A secondary interaction, bound to the right mouse button or the X button, enables the character to place a temporary marker on the ground, which persists for thirty seconds before fading. This marker is the only tool provided for navigation. The labyrinth's walls and floors are composed of tiles that can shift, rotate, or sink when the player steps on specific trigger zones. There is no combat system; the only threat is becoming lost or trapped in a dead-end configuration. The game saves progress automatically upon collecting a Memory Shard, and the player can restart the current level at any time by pressing the Escape key and selecting the restart option. No map or minimap is provided. The interface displays only a small icon indicating the number of shards collected in the current layer and a subtle directional indicator that pulses when the player is near a shard's general location.
