Description

King of Ball is a competitive sports simulation video game developed by Studio Hailstorm and released in 2023 for personal computers and eighth-generation consoles. The game is set in a fictional, globalized league where teams compete in a hybrid sport combining elements of basketball, handball, and dodgeball. The core objective is to score points by throwing a specialized ball into the opposing team’s elevated goal, while simultaneously defending one’s own goal. Matches are played on a rectangular court with three distinct zones: a neutral center zone and two end zones containing the goals. Each team consists of five players on the court, with two additional substitutes available. The ball itself is a lightweight, high-bounce sphere with a diameter of 25 centimeters. The game features a single-player career mode, local multiplayer for up to four players, and an online ranked mode. The visual design employs a cel-shaded aesthetic with exaggerated player proportions, and the physics engine emphasizes momentum and trajectory. The game’s soundtrack is an original electronic score composed by Akira Tanaka. King of Ball received mixed reviews, with praise for its fast-paced gameplay and criticism for its steep learning curve.

Instructions

Gameplay in King of Ball is divided into timed halves, each lasting three minutes in standard matches. The primary control scheme uses a standard gamepad. The left analog stick moves the player character across the court. The right analog stick controls the camera angle. The A button performs a jump, which can be held for a higher leap. The B button executes a pass to the nearest teammate, with the direction determined by the left stick. The X button initiates a shot or throw toward the goal, with power determined by the duration of the button press. The Y button activates a defensive block, which can deflect incoming balls if timed correctly. The left bumper triggers a sprint, consuming stamina indicated by a bar below the health meter. The right bumper performs a slide tackle, used to intercept passes or knock the ball loose from an opponent. The D-pad cycles through quick-team commands: up for aggressive press, down for defensive retreat, left for zone coverage, and right for man-to-man marking. The start button pauses the game and opens the menu. The select button displays a tactical overlay showing player positions and ball trajectory. In the single-player career mode, players manage team finances, train attributes, and negotiate contracts between matches. The online mode uses a skill-based matchmaking system with a ranking ladder from Bronze to Diamond.
