Description

Jumping Jack is a single-player action game developed by the British company Imagine Software and released in 1983 for the ZX Spectrum home computer. The game was later ported to other platforms including the Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC. The player controls a character named Jack, who is trapped inside a vertically scrolling industrial complex. The objective is to navigate Jack upward through a series of narrow platforms and conveyor belts while avoiding hazards such as moving obstacles, falling objects, and enemy creatures. The game is notable for its fast-paced, reflex-based gameplay and its distinctive visual style, which uses simple, colorful sprites against a black background. The level design consists of a single, continuous vertical shaft divided into distinct sections, each with increasing difficulty. The game does not feature a save function or a pause feature; the player must complete the ascent in one session. A score is displayed at the top of the screen, awarding points for each platform cleared and for collecting bonus items. The game ends when Jack loses all three lives, which are depleted upon contact with any hazard or by falling off the bottom of the screen.

Instructions

The player controls Jack using a joystick or keyboard. On the ZX Spectrum, the default keyboard controls are the Q key for left, the W key for right, and the space bar for jump. The Commodore 64 version uses the joystick port 2, with the fire button for jump. The player must guide Jack horizontally across platforms that scroll upward at a constant rate. Jack can move left or right and jump to reach higher platforms. The jump is activated by pressing the designated jump key or button; the height and distance of the jump are fixed. The player must time jumps to avoid colliding with moving barriers, such as sliding blocks and rotating gears, and to land on narrow ledges. Conveyor belts appear in later sections, forcing Jack to move in a specific direction unless the player counteracts the belt's motion. Falling off a platform results in instant loss of a life. The game ends when all lives are lost, at which point the screen displays the final score. No continues or level select options are provided.
