Description

Jack Blast is a single-player puzzle-action video game developed by independent studio Voxel Forge and released in 2023 for personal computers and mobile platforms. The game is set in a fictional subterranean mining colony where a catastrophic energy surge has destabilized the core reactor. The player assumes the role of a maintenance drone tasked with neutralizing volatile energy crystals that have scattered throughout the facility. The game employs a top-down perspective with a grid-based playfield. The primary objective is to clear each level by detonating clusters of colored crystals before they reach a critical mass and cause a chain reaction that destroys the drone. The game features 80 levels across four distinct zones, each introducing new crystal types and environmental hazards such as collapsing platforms and energy barriers. The visual style is characterized by flat, geometric shapes and a limited color palette, with a minimalist user interface that displays only the current score, remaining moves, and a threat meter. The soundtrack consists of ambient electronic tones that intensify as the threat level increases. Jack Blast received moderate critical attention for its straightforward mechanics and escalating difficulty curve.

Instructions

Gameplay in Jack Blast is turn-based and operates on a grid of tiles. The player controls the drone using directional inputs: the arrow keys on a keyboard, a virtual directional pad on mobile, or a standard gamepad’s left analog stick. Each move shifts the drone one tile in the chosen direction. The drone can also perform a “blast” action by pressing the spacebar (keyboard), tapping the blast button (mobile), or pressing the A button (gamepad). This action detonates any crystal tile directly adjacent to the drone in the direction it is facing. Detonating a crystal removes it from the grid and adds its point value to the score. If two or more crystals of the same color are adjacent to the detonated crystal, they also explode in a chain reaction, clearing a larger area. The player must avoid allowing any crystal to remain on the grid for more than five of the player’s turns. Each turn, the threat meter increments for every crystal present. When the meter reaches maximum, the crystal detonates automatically, ending the level in failure. The drone can also collect power-ups, such as a shield that prevents one automatic detonation or a bomb that clears all crystals of a single color. The game provides a pause function via the Escape key (keyboard) or a dedicated pause button (mobile and gamepad). Levels are completed when all crystals are cleared from the grid.
