Description

Hop-Hop is a single-player platform video game developed by the independent studio Gummy Cat Games and released in 2023 for personal computers and mobile devices. The game is set in a series of vertically oriented, procedurally generated caverns. The player controls a small, round, frog-like creature named Pip. The primary objective is to ascend through these caverns by leaping from one narrow ledge to another, avoiding environmental hazards such as falling stalactites, rising water levels, and predatory insects. The game features a minimalist art style with flat, saturated colors and a chiptune soundtrack. Each ascent is timed, and the game tracks the highest altitude reached by the player. There is no narrative or character development; the focus is entirely on the mechanical challenge of precise jumping and timing. The game ends when Pip falls off a ledge, is struck by a hazard, or when the player chooses to restart.

Instructions

Gameplay and controls are based on a single primary action: jumping. The player character, Pip, automatically clings to any horizontal surface upon landing. To initiate a jump, the player must press and hold the designated action key or button. The duration of the press determines the height and distance of the jump. A short tap produces a small hop, while a longer press results in a higher, farther leap. The player can control horizontal movement only while Pip is in the air, using the left and right directional keys or a tilt sensor on mobile devices. There is no ability to change direction or stop mid-jump once the button is released. The game provides no power-ups, checkpoints, or save states. Each attempt begins from the bottom of the cavern. The interface displays a single numerical counter indicating the current altitude in meters. The only other control is a dedicated restart button, which resets the game to the starting position.
