Description

Hammer Strike is a single-player action game developed by Ironclad Games and released in 2003 for personal computers. The game is set in a medieval fantasy world where the player controls a blacksmith named Garrick, who must defend his forge and village from invading goblin forces. The narrative is minimal, focusing on the immediate threat of the goblin horde and Garrick’s role as the last line of defense. The game employs a top-down perspective with a fixed camera angle, rendering environments in a hand-drawn, cel-shaded art style. The primary visual elements include a central forge, an anvil, and a series of defensive walls that can be upgraded. The sound design features clanging metal, ambient forest noises, and goblin battle cries. Hammer Strike is notable for its integration of crafting and combat mechanics, requiring the player to manage resources such as iron ore and coal to produce weapons and armor during pauses between waves of enemies. The game received moderate critical reception for its innovative concept but was criticized for repetitive gameplay and limited enemy variety. It was distributed exclusively through digital download platforms and has since become a niche title within the action-strategy genre.

Instructions

Gameplay in Hammer Strike is divided into two phases: crafting and combat. During the crafting phase, the player uses the mouse to interact with the anvil and furnace. Left-clicking on the furnace activates the smelting process, converting raw ore into ingots. The player must then left-click on the anvil to open a crafting menu, where a selection of weapons (swords, maces, axes) and armor (helmets, chest plates, shields) is displayed. Each item requires a specific number of ingots and coal, shown in the inventory panel at the bottom of the screen. The player selects an item by left-clicking its icon, and a progress bar indicates the crafting time. The game pauses during this phase, allowing the player to plan without pressure.

The combat phase begins automatically when the goblin wave timer expires. The player controls Garrick directly using the keyboard. The W, A, S, and D keys move the character in four cardinal directions. The left mouse button performs a standard attack, while the right mouse button executes a heavy strike that consumes stamina, displayed as a green bar above the health bar. The spacebar triggers a block, reducing incoming damage. The number keys 1 through 4 equip weapons from the inventory, and the Q key cycles through armor pieces. The player must repair damaged equipment by returning to the forge during brief intermissions, accessed by pressing the E key near the anvil. The game ends when Garrick’s health reaches zero or the forge is destroyed.
