Description

Halloween Theet is a single-player action-puzzle game developed by independent studio Spooky Codex and released in October 2023 for Windows and macOS. The game is set in a fictional suburban town during the night of Halloween. The player controls a character known as the Theet Collector, a figure tasked with retrieving a set of enchanted teeth that have been scattered across the neighborhood by a mischievous spirit. These teeth, referred to as Theet, are hidden inside jack-o'-lanterns, under porch steps, within hollow trees, and other seasonal locations. The game world is rendered in a low-polygon, cel-shaded art style with a muted color palette dominated by oranges, purples, and blacks. Ambient sound effects include distant wind, creaking gates, and occasional laughter. The objective is to collect all 50 Theet before dawn, represented by a timer that counts down from 60 minutes. Each Theet collected adds to a score multiplier, but missing a Theet or triggering a trap resets the multiplier. The game features a nonlinear map with five distinct districts: Maple Lane, Pumpkin Field, Cemetery Grove, Schoolyard, and the Abandoned Fairground. Each district contains environmental puzzles that require the player to manipulate objects such as moving ladders, activating switches, or distracting roaming NPCs like costumed children and automated scarecrows. The game has no combat; failure occurs when the timer expires or when the player is caught by the spirit, which appears as a translucent figure that patrols the map at increasing speed as the night progresses.

Instructions

Gameplay and controls are based on third-person exploration and object interaction. The player character moves using the W, A, S, and D keys on a keyboard or the left analog stick on a controller. The camera is controlled with the mouse or right analog stick. The primary action button, assigned to the E key or the A button on a controller, is used to interact with objects such as opening jack-o'-lanterns, picking up Theet, or activating puzzle elements. The spacebar or Y button performs a contextual action, such as climbing a ladder or hiding inside a bush to avoid the spirit. The player can access an inventory screen by pressing the Tab key or the Select button, which displays the number of collected Theet, the current multiplier, and the remaining time. A mini-map in the upper-right corner of the screen shows the player's position and the locations of nearby Theet as faint glowing dots. The spirit's proximity is indicated by a pulsing red border on the screen edges and an increasing heartbeat sound effect. To evade the spirit, the player must break line of sight by moving behind obstacles or entering hiding spots. The game saves progress automatically at the start of each district, but the timer does not reset upon reloading a save. The player can restart the entire game from the main menu at any time. No difficulty settings are available; the game presents a fixed challenge that increases in complexity as the spirit's patrol speed and the number of traps per district escalate.
