Description

Halloween Shuffle is a digital puzzle game released in 2023 by independent developer Spooky Code Studios. The game is set during a single night on October 31st in a fictional suburban neighborhood. The core objective involves a player character, a young child in a ghost costume, who must navigate a series of interconnected houses and yards to collect candy. The environment is rendered in a two-dimensional, side-scrolling perspective with a muted color palette dominated by oranges, purples, and blacks. The game features a fixed camera angle that follows the player character. The primary challenge is not combat but spatial navigation and timing. Each house presents a unique layout of obstacles, including animated jack-o'-lanterns, moving fences, and patrolling adult figures. The game employs a physics engine that governs the movement of objects such as rolling pumpkins and swinging gates. The soundtrack consists of ambient sound effects, including wind, distant laughter, and creaking wood, with no musical score. The game has a single-player campaign consisting of twelve levels, each increasing in complexity. A scoring system awards points based on the number of candies collected and the speed of completion. The game does not include a save feature; progress is lost upon exiting.

Instructions

Gameplay and controls are managed through a keyboard or a standard game controller. The player character moves left and right using the A and D keys or the left analog stick. The spacebar or the A button on a controller initiates a jump. The jump height is fixed and cannot be charged. The player can perform a double jump by pressing the jump button again while airborne. Interaction with objects, such as ringing doorbells or opening gates, is performed by pressing the E key or the X button when the character is adjacent to the object. The player character has a stamina meter displayed as a small pumpkin icon in the upper-left corner of the screen. Sprinting is activated by holding the Shift key or the right trigger, which depletes the stamina meter. The meter recharges when the player stops sprinting. The game interface displays a candy counter in the upper-right corner, showing the current collection total and the level’s target. A timer is shown below the candy counter, counting upward from zero. The player loses a life if the character touches a patrolling adult figure or falls into a decorative pond. Lives are represented by three small ghost icons at the top of the screen. Losing all lives results in a game over screen, requiring the player to restart the current level from the beginning. The pause menu is accessed by pressing the Escape key or the Start button, allowing the player to restart the level or quit to the main menu.
