Description
Halloween Murder is a point-and-click adventure horror game developed by Nightfall Interactive and released in 2012 for Windows and macOS. The game is set in the fictional town of Ravenwood on the night of October 31. The narrative follows Detective Claire Hartley as she investigates a series of murders occurring during a town-wide Halloween festival. The player assumes the role of Hartley, who must gather evidence, interview suspects, and solve puzzles to identify the killer before midnight. The game features a fixed isometric perspective with pre-rendered backgrounds. The visual style employs muted colors and high-contrast lighting to emphasize shadows and atmospheric tension. The soundtrack consists of ambient drone sounds and occasional diegetic noises, such as wind or creaking floorboards. The game contains no jump scares or explicit gore; horror is conveyed through narrative tension and environmental storytelling. Halloween Murder received mixed reviews, with critics praising its puzzle design but noting the linear plot structure and limited replay value.
Instructions
Gameplay is controlled entirely through a mouse interface. The player moves Detective Hartley by left-clicking on a location within the current scene. Interactive objects, characters, and exits are highlighted when the cursor hovers over them. A right-click opens an inventory panel at the bottom of the screen, where collected items are stored. To use an item, the player left-clicks to select it from the inventory, then left-clicks on an interactive object in the game world. Combining items is performed by dragging one inventory item onto another. Dialogue with non-player characters is initiated by left-clicking on them. Conversations present a list of topics; the player selects a topic by left-clicking on it. Some dialogue choices affect the availability of later clues. Puzzles are solved by manipulating objects in the environment or using inventory items in specific sequences. The game includes a notebook feature, accessed by pressing the N key, which records clues, suspect statements, and map locations. The player can save progress at any time by pressing the Escape key and selecting the save option. The game does not include a fail state; incorrect actions result in no progress but do not end the game.
