Description
Halloween Mazes is a single-player puzzle video game released in 1983 for the Atari 2600 console. The game was developed and published by Apollo. The objective is to navigate a series of maze-like environments themed around Halloween iconography. The player controls a character depicted as a small ghost, moving through a fixed, top-down maze layout. Each maze contains a set of collectible items, such as pumpkins or candy corn, which must be gathered to complete the level. The game features a limited number of mazes, each increasing in complexity and size. A timer is displayed at the top of the screen, imposing a time limit for each maze. Upon collecting all items within the time limit, the player advances to the next maze. Failure to collect all items before the timer expires results in the loss of a life. The game ends when all lives are exhausted. The visual presentation is simple, utilizing the Atari 2600’s color palette to depict walls, paths, and Halloween-themed sprites. Sound effects are limited to basic tones for item collection and time warnings. Halloween Mazes is considered a straightforward maze-chase variant without enemy characters or combat mechanics.
Instructions
Gameplay is controlled exclusively via the Atari 2600 joystick. The player moves the ghost character in four cardinal directions: up, down, left, and right. The joystick must be pushed in the desired direction to initiate movement. The character moves continuously in that direction until the joystick is released or a wall is encountered. Walls are impassable and block movement. The player cannot move diagonally. The single action button on the joystick is not used in this game; all interaction is through directional movement. The game begins by pressing the console’s reset switch. The player selects the starting maze by using the game select switch, which cycles through available maze layouts. The timer begins counting down immediately upon starting a maze. The player must guide the ghost over every collectible item in the maze. Items disappear upon contact. The current score and remaining time are displayed on the screen. The player loses a life if the timer reaches zero before all items are collected. The game ends when all lives are lost, at which point the screen displays a game over message. No pause function is available.
