Description

Giddy Jacks is a single-player and local multiplayer action game developed by the independent studio Digital Tentacle and released in 2023 for personal computers and select home consoles. The game is set in a surreal, monochromatic world where players control a small, spring-legged character known as a Jack. The objective is to navigate a series of vertical, procedurally generated towers composed of unstable platforms. The core mechanic involves the Jack’s ability to extend its spring legs to bounce between surfaces, with the primary goal being to ascend as high as possible without falling. The environment is hostile, featuring moving obstacles, collapsing blocks, and environmental hazards that shift with each play session. The game employs a minimalist visual style, using stark black-and-white line art against a gray background, with the only color appearing on the player character and specific interactive elements. Giddy Jacks includes a competitive local multiplayer mode for up to four players, where participants race to reach the top of a shared tower while being able to knock opponents off platforms. The game does not feature a narrative or character progression; instead, it focuses entirely on score-based climbing and survival.

Instructions

Gameplay and controls are centered on momentum and timing. The player character, the Jack, is controlled using a keyboard or a standard gamepad. On a keyboard, the left and right arrow keys or the A and D keys control horizontal movement. The spacebar or the up arrow key initiates a jump. The Jack does not walk; it moves by hopping. Holding the jump button while in the air allows the Jack to extend its spring legs, increasing the height of the next bounce. The duration of the button press determines the extension length. Releasing the button causes the legs to retract, and the Jack lands. The player must time the extension to clear gaps or reach higher platforms. Collision with a platform from the side or below results in a loss of control and a fall. The game features a single life per run; any fall off the bottom of the screen ends the session. The interface displays a current height score in the top-left corner and a high score in the top-right corner. In multiplayer mode, each player selects a color and uses their own set of controls. The game ends when all but one player have fallen. No pause menu exists during active gameplay; the game can only be restarted from the main menu.
