Description
Flap Up is a mobile and browser-based arcade game developed by an independent studio, first released in 2023. The game is a vertical-scrolling obstacle avoidance title, characterized by its minimalist visual design and increasing difficulty curve. The player controls a small, stylized bird-like character that must navigate through a series of narrow gaps between moving horizontal barriers. The game environment consists of a static background, typically a solid color or simple gradient, with the barriers rendered in contrasting hues. The core objective is to achieve the highest possible score, measured by the number of barriers successfully passed. The game features a single, continuous mode with no save points or checkpoints; a collision with any barrier or the screen boundaries results in an immediate termination of the session. The score resets to zero upon each restart. The game does not include a narrative, character progression, or unlockable content. Its design focuses on short, repeatable play sessions, with the primary challenge being the player’s reaction time and spatial awareness. The game is available on iOS and Android platforms, as well as through web browsers, and is free to play with optional advertisements.
Instructions
Gameplay and controls are based on a single input mechanism. The player character, a small bird, is positioned on the left side of the screen and moves vertically. The barriers, which are horizontal lines with a central gap, scroll from right to left at a constant speed. The player must tap or click the screen to make the bird flap its wings, which causes it to ascend. Releasing the input causes the bird to descend due to simulated gravity. The player must time these inputs to guide the bird through the gaps in the barriers. The gaps vary in vertical position and width, becoming narrower and more frequent as the score increases. The game does not allow for horizontal movement; the bird remains fixed on the x-axis. The interface displays the current score in the upper center of the screen. A single tap on the screen after a collision restarts the game from the beginning. There are no additional buttons, menus, or control options. The game does not support keyboard or controller input on mobile devices; on browser versions, the spacebar or mouse click functions identically to a tap. The game provides no tutorial or practice mode; the player learns the timing through repeated attempts.
