Description
Extra Ball Chains is a digital pinball simulation game developed by independent studio Neon Tilt Interactive and released in 2023 for Windows, macOS, and mobile platforms. The game is distinguished by its core mechanic of linking consecutive ball launches into a single scoring chain. Unlike traditional pinball tables where each ball is an independent attempt, Extra Ball Chains treats every ball as a node in a sequence. The player’s score accumulates across multiple balls, with multipliers increasing based on the length of the current chain. The table design is abstract, featuring neon-lit ramps, bumpers, and targets arranged in a circular layout. There are no flippers; instead, the ball is launched from a central plunger and guided by the player’s control of the table’s tilt and rotation. The game includes three difficulty modes: Standard, Chain Master, and Endless. Standard mode limits the player to ten balls per game. Chain Master mode resets the chain multiplier if the ball drains without hitting a scoring target. Endless mode removes ball limits but introduces a timer that decreases with each missed target. The visual aesthetic is minimalist, with a dark background and bright, color-coded scoring zones. Sound design consists of synthesized tones that increase in pitch as the chain multiplier rises. The game tracks high scores locally and supports leaderboard uploads for online comparison.
Instructions
Gameplay and controls are centered on managing the ball’s trajectory through a single, non-flipper table. The player launches the ball by pressing and holding the launch button or key, then releasing to set power. Once the ball is in play, the player can tilt the table by moving the mouse or dragging a finger on a touchscreen. Tilt is the primary control method; it shifts the table’s angle to guide the ball toward scoring targets. The table rotates 360 degrees, allowing the player to aim the ball at specific ramps or bumpers. Scoring targets are divided into three types: chain nodes, multiplier gates, and bonus rings. Hitting a chain node adds one to the current chain count and increases the score multiplier by 0.5x. Multiplier gates double the current chain multiplier for a limited time. Bonus rings award a fixed score and reset the chain multiplier to zero. The ball drains when it falls into the central drain hole. After a drain, the next ball is automatically loaded, and the chain count persists unless the player fails to hit a scoring target within five seconds of launch. The interface displays the current chain count, multiplier, and remaining balls in the upper left corner. A small minimap in the lower right shows the table layout and the ball’s position. Keyboard controls are: Spacebar to launch, arrow keys or W/A/S/D to tilt, and Escape to pause. On mobile, touch and drag tilts the table, and a tap on the launch pad releases the ball. The game supports controller input with analog stick for tilt and face buttons for launch and pause.
