Description
Don't Be Angry with Match Man is a minimalist puzzle game developed by an independent studio and released in 2023 for mobile platforms and PC. The game presents a single-player experience centered on a small, stick-figure character referred to as the Match Man. The core premise involves navigating the Match Man through a series of increasingly complex, grid-based levels. Each level contains a set of obstacles, including walls, pits, and moving hazards, as well as a designated exit point. The player’s objective is to guide the Match Man from a starting position to the exit without triggering any of the level’s failure conditions, which typically involve the character falling into pits or colliding with hazards. The game’s visual style is deliberately simple, using flat colors and basic geometric shapes. The title derives from the character’s tendency to become visibly frustrated, indicated by a change in facial expression or a brief animation, when the player fails a level. The game includes a level counter and a timer for each attempt, but no score or leaderboard system. The difficulty curve is steep, with later levels requiring precise timing and spatial reasoning.
Instructions
Gameplay and controls are based on a turn-based movement system. The player controls the Match Man by inputting directional commands. On mobile devices, this is achieved through on-screen directional arrows or swipe gestures. On PC, the arrow keys or the WASD keys are used. Each input moves the Match Man one grid cell in the chosen direction. The game does not allow diagonal movement. After each player move, all moving hazards in the level also advance one step according to a fixed pattern. The player must plan moves to avoid these hazards. The interface displays the current level number, a restart button, and a pause button. There is no undo function. A level is completed when the Match Man occupies the same grid cell as the exit marker. A level is failed if the Match Man moves into a pit, is struck by a hazard, or attempts to move into a wall. Upon failure, the level resets immediately, and the Match Man’s expression changes to indicate anger. The game provides no hints or tutorials beyond the first three introductory levels. The controls are responsive and input lag is minimal. The game saves progress automatically after each completed level.
